Investments do rise and do fall in value and we strongly advise that professional advice is taken before investing your money
Understanding how to accumulate wealth is important not only for those who want to retire from work full time, but also for those who have financial goals along the way.
I have for some time been trying to get clients and potential clients to understand that the biggest return on investment is ‘investing in yourself’. Unfortunately, it seems that all too often this message falls upon deaf ears, as most people do not want to change the status quo. As a financial planner, investment adviser and all-round good chap, if I can get a client who wants to grow their wealth to understand, that with a bit of clear thinking (strategic planning), I can help to change their future financial outlook. A simple example is to look at your career and what opportunities it offers, maybe you’re an employee, or maybe you have your own business, whatever your situation, everyone has options but most cant see the wood for the trees. So take a look at your present employer/business, think about the potential opportunities and how you can best capitalise on these. I recently counselled a young man who wanted to buy his first home with his wife, he proudly explained what he earns and that he is employed in the IT world which is a great industry. The problem that I saw was that he did not understand his worth, simple back of the fag packet stuff, he is not being paid enough by his existing employer when compared to other employers for the same job (‘market indicator’). Like most people he likes his job and his life runs smoothly. What he needs to ask himself is how much do I want my own house? If this chap wants it enough then with a bit of gumption, he should be able to buy his first home in say 12 months’ time, either by taking employment elsewhere or negotiating with his current employer for a fairer pay package. If however he does not grab the problem with both hands, he will most likely be stuck in his rented flat for some years to come or even forever. As you can see, the greatest help I have been to this young man has nothing to do with an investment portfolio and how well it has performed, but practical, honest advice which could be life changing if acted upon. What about you, what can you do to improve your wealth position? 14/2/2020 Roses are red, Violets are Blue...Love is important but your finances are too!
